After watching Shen Yun, Samir Faidi, an assistant professor at the Department of Surgery at McMaster University and a Surgeon at the Hamilton General Hospital, commented that “It’s wonderful to know about the culture of other people. I haven’t been in China before so this is a good exploration of what [the Chinese] people do and what they believe.”

In December 2011, this cultural whirlwind has taken Shen Yun to the neighboring state of Texas, with stops at Austin, Houston and Dallas. The world-class performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts  is scheduled to hit Phoenix January 27-29, 2012 at ASU Gammage.  The Shen yun in Arizona performing arts tickets are now available at www.AZshows.com

The “Shen Yun show in Arizona” promises to be a “unique and unforgettable experience showcasing world-class production set,” said the Foundation for Traditional Culture Community Outreach Officer, Jonathan Ferng.

“In a world of chaos, trauma, and negativity, Shen Yun will bring arts, culture, educational, and entertainment that will bring about hope: hope for a better world, hope for a better future, and hope for a better life,” said Jonathan.

Jonathan promised the show will prove to be uniquely informative, uplifting and refreshing experience, as is being confirmed by Omega Medina, former senior manager for the Grammy Awards as, who have previously attended the show, said it was “A complete edifying experience of the human spirit. I just thought that the performance was brilliantly designed. … I feel like a better human being because it speaks not only to my intellect, but it speaks to my heart.”

Meanwhile, Richard Connema, critic for Talkin'' Broadway and seasoned theater patron “Talkin'' Broadway” Theatre Critic, noted it is a “Spectacular Is A ''Five Star'' Show”. He probably has reviewed over three to four thousand shows since 1942. “I will give this production 5 Stars. That''s the top.”

Putting the icing on the cake, Elizabeth Hubley, Senator of Ottawa, Canada was “moved to tears” Watching Shen Yun. She commented: “The show was absolutely stunning. It was just astonishing in its exuberance and its colour, in the choreography, in the music. It was enjoyable from the beginning to the end.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts was established in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.

After more than 60 years of Communist rule in China, and especially after the Cultural Revolution, Chinese traditional culture has been all but completely demolished. However, the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity, as well as a reverence for the gods and the heavens, cannot be destroyed.
In order to restore and revive Chinese tradition

al culture, a group of overseas Chinese artists established Shen Yun in New York in 2006. About 90 artists embarked on Shen Yun’s tour in 2007 in the first year, including a dance troupe, an orchestra, solo singers and musicians, emcees, and production staff. By 2009, Shen Yun had already grown to three performance troupes and orchestras of comparable size. Today, Shen Yun counts many winners of international dance and vocal competitions among its artists and the orchestras include many musicians from world-renowned symphonies and conservatories.

Shen Yun Performing Arts’ rapid growth has enabled it to reach all corners of the globe. The group will only continue to expand, and in the not-too-distant future, Shen Yun will have many companies touring around the world simultaneously.

The Shen Yun Show in Arizona  tickets are on sales  at  Tempe Gammage theater.

Performing Arts Ticket Sales Kick Off for Shen Yun In Phoenix Arizona

An exclusive angle on what celebrities and performing arts authorities are saying about Shen Yun Performing Arts, a nonprofit New York-based classical Chinese dance company whose mission is to revive 5,000 years of divinely-inspired Chinese culture. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts has become a global phenomenon educating and enriching the hearts and minds of millions. www.AZshows.com

Arizona performing arts fans will have the exciting opportunity to see the internationally-acclaimed, classical Chinese dance troupe called Shen Yun Performing Arts at ASU Gammage in Tempe, Arizona at the end of January 2012, Shen Yun Performing Arts established in 2006 and based in New York.  Its mission is to reclaim the five-millennia-old treasures of traditional Chinese culture. China was once known as “Shen Zhou,” or the “Land of the Divine,” because the Chinese believed their culture came from the heavens. It is thus fitting that when literally translated in context from Chinese, “Shen Yun” means “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Unfortunately, due to the social and political changes in 20th century China, a show like Shen Yun can no longer be found in modern China.

Shen Yun showcases roughly 20 completely new classical Chinese dances and songs each year. Tumbling jumps, diverse spins and gentle gestures breathe life into the portrayed heroes of ancient Chinese myths and legends. State-of-the-art digital backdrops are vivid and animated, complementing the bright, handmade costumes reflecting China’s distant dynasties and ethnic groups. A full, live orchestra combines both Eastern and Western instruments for a distinctly refreshing and uniquely mesmerizing sound. Each season, masterful choreographers work closely with composers to custom tailor each musical piece to the intricacies of each dance. There are even piano-accompanied vocal soloists who through their insightful lyrics lend insight into traditional Chinese beliefs, universal themes and time-honored values. Altogether, all of these features allows for an otherworldly experience that transports audiences back to ancient China and shares the essence of Chinese culture in a way that is both educational and inspiring.

An example from the dances from past years includes the “Yi Ethnic Dance.” The Yi people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Southern China. Their passion for music and dance was channeled through the dancers’ jubilant spirit, their rainbow-colored silken shirts and their exotic headdresses. Story-based dance is very characteristic of classical Chinese dance, honoring the triumphs and moral uprightness of past leaders. One dance piece named “The Loyalty of Yuefei” is a tribute to General Yuefei, one of the most well-known generals in Chinese history who was revered for his skill, honesty and patriotism to his country. His mother tattooed 4 Chinese characters on his back meaning, “serve the country with the utmost loyalty,” before he left his native village to lead his troops to several victories.

Jesse Miranda, a producer and director from Los Angeles remarked, “In a world of chaos, trauma, and negativity, Shen Yun brought something most needed in this world: hope. Hope for a better world, hope for a better future, hope for a better life.” Indeed, many of the performers actively cultivate their moral character. In their performance, they can then embody the inner peacefulness and dignity rooted in traditional Chinese values. Classical Chinese dance is stunningly expressive, able to portray many different characters and emotions. Feminine grace and serenity is contrasted with masculine dignity and strength. “If heaven is the way we saw it tonight, count me in,” said Nathaniel Kahn, an Academy and Emmy-nominated filmmaker.

Shen Yun Performing Arts (www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org) has performed in over 20 countries. In 2010 alone, there were at least 1 million live audience members around the world. Broadway critic Richard Connema commented, “I’ve reviewed over 3,000 to 4,000 shows since 1942… I give the production 5 stars. That’s the top! I’ve never seen anything like that. I’ve seen enough Broadway shows that still cannot compare to what I saw tonight.” Shen Yun is a uniquely informative, uplifting and refreshing experience not to be missed.

Truly great art has the power to fill our hearts with hope and remind us that a deeper, more meaningful life is possible to achieve even in these turbulent times. Come witness the resilience of the human spirit to keep that which is divinely inspired alive.

Shen Yun Performing Arts comes to ASU Gammage Hall from January 27th to 29th of 2012. Ticket prices range from $50 to $138. For more information, please visit http://www.azshows.com/en_tickets.html.

A Dazzling and Divine Show of Grace and Strength

Dazzling Dances

Shen Yun’s authentic dances and dazzling costumes have Chinese origins but Shen Yun Performing Arts is based in New York City. Chinese dance is composed of graceful and strong movements that are as defined and as universally understandable as ballet.  It is a discipline that people will recognize and respect regardless of their background or expertise. Chinese dance’s tumbling and flips are reminiscent of robust gymnastics but in actuality, it is gymnastics that has borrowed from the Chinese arts.

The music also carries a familiar tune as it transports the audience into a whimsical fantasy world.  The orchestra is composed of a mix of Chinese and Western instruments, playing stylized music that carries a unique nuance that balances between the Eastern and Western disciplines.  Each act’s music is as diverse as the dances. The unique melodies gently draw out the raw sweetness and power of each performance, even after the curtain has fallen. The show becomes a cohesive and flowing whole when all the elements are combined.

Magical Music
But the music is not merely restricted to the orchestra pit. There were acts that focused on the power of the human voice accompanied by the piano.  The singers all rocked the house with emotional and powerful ballads that beckoned images of an idyllic and idealisticChina.

Interactive Backdrop – Crossing Language Barriers
Opera often leaves newbies scratching their heads because of a language gap, but Shen Yun  performance counters this obstacle by placing translation for the lyrics strategically overhead on the interactive backdrop, which changes between sets.  Shen Yun uses this unique background to its advantage to keep the stage clear and to bring focus to the dancers. It also provides an appropriate setting for specific acts. These backgrounds span from country landscapes and palaces to dense bamboo forests and modern cities.  It literally comes to life as the artists on stage interact with it.  It is a powerful part of the performance that is unique to this show.

The performance
The performance has an established image of grace and beauty drawn from the

influence of over 5,000 years of Chinese history, but it is also a very light-hearted experience.  The two hosts introduced each act with a casual, bilingual conversation either between themselves or with the audience. The applause and laughter was always earnest and the natural, relaxed nature gave Shen Yun a sense of warmth that is not always associated with a dance show. I saw a few young girls during the intermission who were dancing about excitedly and chattering about the first act. The scene brought a smile to my own face. Most parents are familiar with children’s ennui when it comes to “cultural activities”, but Shen Yun is certain to spark the interest of the entire family. No embarrassing complaining or snoring to be heard!

China’s Divine Past Meets Present
China is a large country with a rich history and a plethora of ethnic groups. Though there is a lot of ground for this show to cover, Shen Yun does it elegantly and effortlessly.  The show is a treat that showcases its vast and diverse population from the Mongolians to the small Yi ethnic group. It weaves its way through classic epic tales such as “Journey to the West”, as well as tales of the present.  All walks of life were included from the humble (and sometimes mischievous!) lives within a monastery to the opulent life within theImperial Court.   The acts all stand on their own but they bring the history of Chinese culture and dance to life when all of them are combined, and they paint an unforgettably diverse image ofChina.

Moments with Shen Yun
Shen Yun is a vivacious and charming show that reinvents itself again and again every year.  It is a cultural 2.5-hour feast for the senses that flies by all too quickly, bringing joy and happiness to people all over the world whether they see it as a peek into Chinese culture, or as simply an entertaining dance performance.  I hope that those who go to see the show come out from it with glowing smiles!

Save the Date: World-Class Performing Arts Company Coming Soon to ASU Gammage

An insider’s perspective on Shen Yun Performing Arts, a classical Chinese dance company based in New York whose cast of talented dancers, musicians, vocalists, directors, and producers strive to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture. www.AZshows.com

Online PR News – 30-July-2011 –Phoenix, AZ (AZ Shows) Traditional Chinese culture is woven full of myths and legends, many of which contain principles from China’s three major schools of thought: Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. In ancient China, the most honored men and women were said to have possessed the greatest virtue and honor, and it was believed that doing good deeds would bring good fortune. Unfortunately, due to sociopolitical changes in the 20th century, China has seen a loss of many cultural traditions—a tragedy that Shen Yun Performing Arts (www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org) now strives to remedy.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts was established in 2006 to revive the glory of traditional Chinese culture. Every year, a completely new production is brought to life with beautifully expressive classical Chinese dancers, exquisite handmade costumes, a live orchestra featuring a blend of Western and Eastern instruments, animated state-of-the-art, three-dimensional backdrops and performances by decorated vocal and instrumental soloists. Shen Yun Performing Arts has performed on some of the world’s most renowned stages, including London’s Royal Festival Hall, Washington D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center, New York City’s Lincoln Center and Radio City Music Hall, Paris’ Le Palais de Congrès, and many, many more.

Since its beginning 5,000 years ago, Chinese culture has found its way into every corner of the globe in the form of martial arts, Feng Shui, Tai Chi, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and more. The origin of these ancient practices is amazingly spiritual and mystical. Indeed, China was once known as “Shen Zhou,” or “Land of the Divine,” due to the belief of the Ancient Chinese that its culture was inherited from the heavens. Unfortunately, due to sociopolitical revolutions in the 20th century, much of China’s rich cultural traditions have been lost.

The essence of traditional Chinese culture is based on inner cultivation of one’s moral character and adherence to Confucian ethics. As Li Weihao, Triple Crown Winner of the Taiwan National Dance Competition puts it, “From the dances to the body movements, I enjoyed all of them, and I just don’t know how to describe it—a kind of inner beauty.” Weihao speaks a sentiment that all the dancers in Shen Yun Performing Arts believe in: that to create true art, inner beauty must first be born.

At a packed show at New York City’s Lincoln Center earlier this year on June 23rd, fashion designer Donna Karan of DKNY expressed that the shows were “like taking a journey to China, here in New York.” In order to effectively showcase traditional Chinese culture, Shen Yun Performing Arts presents well-known fables and legends that have been passed on from generation to generation, as well as diverse ethnic dance styles using aesthetically stunning costumes characteristic of each dynasty. Shen Yun Performing Arts’ repertoire guides the audience from ancient China into present day Communist China in an educational and spiritually enlightening journey.
